And while I'm waiting, I'm reading Peopleware by Tom Demarco and Timothy Lister, a fine publication which all of you out there in software development should fucking well have heard of and if you haven't go get yourself an education in why our managers do dumb-ass things and what we can do to try and help them manage us better. This is strictly self-interested self protection. If you like the work you do and want to work someplace that doesn't suck, Peopleware will help you identify your needs and help you assess organizations that might have a prayer of catering to them.
I'm about half way through the book and I'm depressed. I've long since known I work in a loud-ass office and the only way to get quiet concentration time in is to be here really early or really late. Once things start swinging around 9 or 10 o'clock, kiss your concentration goodbye. Our office-pit is loud, friendly congenial and I like the folks. And getting anything done is plenty hard.
What has me discouraged is that we're moving offices in October, and it sounds quite likely that we'll have to put up with the exact same sort of over-crowded noise pit we currently possess. I could rant long and hard about the clear value of quiet workspace and it's going to fall on deaf ears. Somehow I'm disheartened before the battle has even begun. I don't actually object to mini pits, but there's just too many of us in too small a space right now. I think the addition of the last 4 people pushed us over the edge. Anyhow, we're going to have to work something out to keep the crowding down. Bleah.
