From RCN. For free. With a small additional fee for a cable modem.
If RCN manages to find the cash to run Arlington and Fairfax, Cox is in trouble. The service is MUCH better. The installer guy shows up when he says he will, gives you his cell phone number to follow up, and in general does not behave like an ass whose job is to escape while helping you as little as possible. And we didn't get special service from him. He didn't know Reed was an RCN employee.
So, last night, Reed and I played with the television, and now I want to go back to Thailand. Bad. We found the Sundance channel and watched The Scent of Green Papaya. It's a movie about Viet Nam, and it makes me almost able to smell Southeast Asia. We looked at each other as soon as the movie was over and said with one voice "Viet Square" which is our favorite really cheap Vietnamese joint, and went and ate rice vermicelli and sate. I dreamed of Oii and Charin's garden last night and watching the chickens scratch the patio around a pool of water lilies. We discussed becoming expatriots in that way which suggests our children won't see much of us when we retire in the winter months. We'll spend from January to March sleeping under mosquito nets and loafing in Thai gardens. I know I don't want to live there, but visiting heavily is in order.
Anyhow, I hate TV, but I love good movies. We've made a pact to turn the TV off if we're not actively watching something we think is good and we'll see how that goes. For me, cable is a way of not having to rent movies since I hate sitcoms anyway. It'll be interesting to see if the habits of living without cable for a few months change anything.
