If I'd understood how the locks work, though, we'd never have bought the car. There is a computer chip in the key that is keyed to a companion chip in the ignition. A regular locksmith cannot cut a Volvo key. Creating a key requires that the car be left with a mechanic for an hour. Keys cost about 400 bucks a piece. The car came with 3 keys.
I lost 2 sets of keys this year. This was a bad year for me, but I do lose keys about once ever 2-4 years. What the hell are they thinking making their keys 400 bucks a piece??? Why should I have assumed that the ownership cost of a car included this outlandish expense? Gack! And we didn't find out about it until they were actually HANDING us the keys for the car we'd already purchased. Edmunds didn't say anything about it. We certainly thought we'd done our product research. I love the car. It's really comfortable, but we might well have gone with Subaru (provided they don't do the same thing) in order to have enough stinkin' keys.
